The Mon Tiki Eco Catamaran

The Mon Tiki is a Tiki 38, a polynesian-inspired catamaran designed by the legendary multihull pioneer James Wharram.

Wharram's Tiki series represent the evolution of over 40 years of ocean crossing catamaran design, and the result is a boat that is fast, safe, and comfortable.

A hallmark of the Wharram concept is her open bridged-deck design - the Mon Tiki offers more than 300 square feet of on-deck space, allowing passengers to lounge in comfort as the boat moves effortlessly through the water.

With her wide stance and shallow draft Mon Tiki is equally at home on the high seas or in quiet lagoons,  making her the perfect vessel for whale watching in Block Island Sound, or as a comfortable base for a kayaking or paddle-boarding expedition in the tidal marshes of the East End.

The Mon Tiki is a low-emissions vessel. Primary propulsion is provide by her powerful 1400 square foot sail-plan, giving her a cruising speed of 6-8 knots, and a top speed of 16 kts. Auxiliary propulsion for harbor maneuvers and windless conditions is provided by a pair of low-emissions, four stroke Yahama outboard drives. On board systems are powered by a state-of-the art wind and solar hybrid system. This system powers lights, navigation instruments, refrigeration, on-board computers, and house-hold needs.

By harnessing wind and solar energy Mon Tiki is a virtual, self-sustaining island, with a range limited only by the imagination of her crew. As needed she can be a classroom, a community center, a refuge. A place to relax, rejoice, and recharge.

The Mon Tiki is being built under US Coast Guard supervision and is rated to carry 24 passengers, plus her captain and professional crew.

The Tiki 38 is an ocean going design and a proven passage-maker, with safety and comfort as a primary design consideration. Her beam is 28 feet, and her hull design features multiple water-tight compartments, including four foam-filled, unfloodable "crash compartments" capable of floating the entire boat on their own.

Navigation equipment includes GPS plotter, radar, depth sounder, and a comprehensive collection of paper and electronic charts. Onboard communication is provided by VHF, SSB, cell-phone, and satellite phone. Emergency signaling equipment includes all USCG flares and other signaling devices, plus SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea) compliant flares, 406 MHz digital EPIRB, and SPOT Googlemaps enabled location check-in, allowing friends and family ashore to track her progress in real time.

The Mon Tiki is an elegant marriage of ancient design principles and modern maritime technology. The result is a safe, spacious, comfortable, low-impact vessel perfect for a afternoon on the water, a lifetime at sea, or any adventure in between!
